“PM Carney Makes Historic Tribute at Louis Riel Ceremony”

Featured in:

Prime Minister Mark Carney honored the 140th anniversary of Louis Riel’s execution by laying a wreath at his gravesite in Winnipeg. This marked the first time a sitting prime minister attended the annual commemoration ceremony, as noted by Manitoba Métis Federation Housing Minister Will Goodon.

David Chartrand, President of the MMF and head of the Red River Métis’ national government, expressed the significance of Carney’s presence at the St. Boniface Cathedral Cemetery alongside dignitaries from various government levels. Chartrand mentioned how Louis Riel would have been deeply touched by the prime minister’s homage to one of the country’s greatest leaders.

Louis Riel played a complex and controversial role in Canadian history, leading Métis resistances in present-day Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Executed for treason at 41 in 1885, Riel is now celebrated for his contributions to Manitoba’s entry into Canada’s Confederation. He was recognized as the province’s founder in 1992 and posthumously named the first honorary premier in 2023.

During the ceremony, Carney referred to Louis Riel as a foundational figure in Manitoba and Canadian history. He emphasized the importance of Riel’s legacy in uniting and reconciling Canada’s history, pledging to work towards honoring it through reconciliation efforts with Indigenous peoples.

Premier Wab Kinew, who championed the recognition of Riel as Manitoba’s first honorary premier, expressed pride in Carney’s attendance, highlighting the symbolic significance of the prime minister’s presence in contrast to historical attitudes towards Riel. Kinew emphasized the enduring relevance of Riel’s legacy in modern times.

The event was a poignant moment affirming the ongoing relevance of Louis Riel’s contributions and the commitment to reconciliation with Indigenous communities in Canada.
