“New Brunswick Enhances Wildlife Crossings to Prevent Collisions”

Featured in:

On a late August Saturday night, after a game against the Miramichi Timberwolves, the Chaleur Lightning hockey team boarded their bus to return to Bathurst. Assistant coach Alex Ouellet recalled a tense moment when the driver suddenly reacted to a looming figure ahead. A collision with a moose occurred shortly after starting the journey, causing minor scratches to the driver but thankfully leaving the team and coaches unharmed.

The encounter with the moose left a lasting impression on Ouellet and the team, a common experience for many New Brunswickers who have faced similar situations. The incident coincided with the announcement of the installation of two new wildlife crossings on the same highway.

To prevent such encounters, the province employs wildlife fencing and crossings based on collision data analysis. Transportation Minister Chuck Chiasson explained that while extensive fencing lines the highways, it is essential to provide non-intrusive paths for wildlife movement. The recent additions include 82 wildlife crossings, such as the newly constructed tunnels on Route 8, designed to be spacious and easily accessible for various animals.

Wildlife ecologist Graham Forbes emphasized the importance of intuitive design for the tunnels to encourage animals to use them safely. These crossings have proven effective, accommodating not only large mammals but also a variety of wildlife species.

Despite the presence of wildlife tunnels, collision rates have not significantly decreased, with the Department of Transportation focusing on implementing additional safety measures. Ouellet expressed hope for more fencing in the area but acknowledged the challenges of preventing every potential crash. The team remains cautious during their travels, recognizing the importance of proactive measures amidst the wildlife-rich surroundings.
