A man from Calgary and his seven-year-old daughter tragically lost their lives after being swept into the Pacific Ocean in California, according to investigators.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office revealed that Yuji Hu, 39, was at the beach with his wife and two children when a large wave carried his daughter into the ocean, prompting a frantic attempt by the parents to rescue her. Sadly, Hu and his wife were also swept into the water during the rescue effort.

Quick action from a beachgoer and an off-duty park officer led to Hu being pulled from the ocean, where attempts to resuscitate him were made while his wife managed to make it back to the shore on her own.

Following an intensive search, the girl’s body was located by a diver on Sunday. Initially reported as a five-year-old, the family later clarified that the child was seven.

In a statement shared on Facebook, the sheriff’s office conveyed the family’s gratitude to all involved in the search and recovery operations, requesting privacy during this difficult time. The two-year-old child was unharmed, while the adult woman received treatment for mild hypothermia.

The sheriff’s office emphasized that the announcement of the girl’s discovery was delayed until her family could be notified. The body was found approximately 100 meters from the shore and nearly a kilometer north of the initial incident location.

Despite a comprehensive search effort involving the U.S. Coast Guard, California’s fire service, divers, and a helicopter, the search has been halted after an extensive operation on Saturday.

Garrapata State Beach, as per a California government site, is a state park featuring two beach areas and a 15-meter cliff overlooking the Monterey coast.
