Ireland Stuns Canada in FIFA U-17 Penalty Drama

Featured in:

Canada suffered a heartbreaking exit from the FIFA U-17 World Cup on Friday, losing a grueling 10-round penalty shootout to debutant Ireland in the round of 32. In the nail-biting shootout, Irish goalkeeper Alex Noonan made a crucial one-handed save to thwart Canadian defender Elijah Roche, securing a 9-8 victory for Ireland.

The Canadian team managed to equalize late in the game, forcing the match into penalties. Both teams had their chances, with Noonan denying Canada’s first penalty from Kevin Khan, and Canadian goalkeeper Jonathan Ransom stopping Ireland’s Oisin McDonagh. The shootout remained tense until Alex Noonan’s heroic save concluded the match.

Several Canadian players, including Marius Aiyenero, Sergei Kozlovskiy, Van Parker, Aghilas Sadek, Johnny Selemani, Sahil Deo, and Josh Nteziryayo, successfully converted their penalties. On the Irish side, players like Michael Noonan, Finn Sherlock, Jaden Umeh, Vinnie Leonard, Kian McMahon-Brown, Rory Finneran, Victor Ozhianvuna, Grady McDonnell, and Ryan Butler found the back of the net from the spot.

This defeat marked the end of Canada’s impressive run in the tournament, where they had previously struggled with an 0-20-4 record in eight appearances. Meanwhile, Ireland advances to face Switzerland in the round of 16 after their victory over Egypt earlier on the same day.

The pivotal moment for Canada came in the 85th minute when Sergei Kozlovskiy scored a spectacular goal with a right-footed volley from outside the penalty box. Despite their efforts, Canada couldn’t secure the win, and the match proceeded to penalties.

The intense game showcased the talent of young players like Kozlovskiy, who recently joined Atletico Ottawa from CF Montreal’s youth academy. The match also highlighted the skill of players like Alex Noonan, who had a significant impact on the outcome with his crucial saves during the shootout.

The tournament continues to unfold with exciting matchups, and the final is set to take place on November 27 at the Khalifa International Stadium. Canada’s journey in the U-17 World Cup may have ended in a heartbreak, but their performance has been commendable, marking a significant improvement from their previous showings in the competition.
