A recent study conducted by York University PhD student Hadil Elsayed in southern Ontario revealed a significant drop in the total mass of insects collected at two protected sites since the 1990s. Similarly, a citizen-science project in the U.K. recorded a sharp decrease in flying insects by measuring insect splatter on license plates. Numerous studies worldwide report similar insect declines.
Elsayed’s research involved trapping insects at Long Point National Wildlife Area and St. Williams Conservation Reserve between 2021 and 2023, mirroring a survey from the early 1990s. Although her findings are pending peer review, they indicate a nearly 50% reduction in the total trapped insect mass over the past three decades.
These results align with a University of Michigan and Birds Canada study revealing a 62% decline in flying insects at Long Point Bird Observatory between 1977 and 2011.
The insects primarily collected by Elsayed were tiny midges, vital food sources for various wildlife. The decline she observed equated to approximately 640 million midges, a concerning loss affecting not only rare species but also common insect groups.
