As an immigrant family, we arrived in Vancouver in November 2000, coinciding with Remembrance Day. Witnessing the solemn ceremonies and the sea of red poppies, I learned the symbolic significance of the poppy in Canadian culture. While in Chinese culture, the poppy, known as “Yumeiren,” represents hope and poetry, its meaning in Canada encompasses sacrifice, war, peace, and loss.
Reflecting on the historical contributions of Chinese laborers during World War I, I discovered a shared connection with Canada’s past. Despite the initial cultural differences, we embraced Canadian holidays like Pro-D Day and Canada Day, each offering unique insights into Canadian traditions and values.
Participating in Canada Day celebrations, I couldn’t ignore the historical significance of the date for Chinese Canadians, marked by the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1923. Commemorating this painful history alongside fellow Chinese Canadians highlighted our shared experiences and sense of belonging in Canada.
Through personal experiences like celebrating Halloween and receiving thoughtful gifts from my son, I realized that holidays serve as milestones in our family’s growth and integration into Canadian society. Ultimately, our decision to immigrate to Canada was driven by the opportunity to embrace new traditions and gradually find our place within a diverse and welcoming community.
Holidays serve not only as occasions for celebration but also as reminders of our origins and guiding lights as we navigate the path towards a shared future.
