“Coyote Sightings Raise Safety Concerns in Regina Parks”

Featured in:

Residents in Regina are noticing more coyote sightings in local parks, raising concerns about safety. Scott Paton, a frequent visitor to Les Sherman Park, shared his encounter with a curious coyote in mid-August. Paton described the coyote as non-aggressive, coming within close proximity out of curiosity or possibly seeking food. Despite not seeing the coyote again, Paton mentioned finding its scat in the area but remains unworried, citing coyotes’ presence as part of the urban habitat.

However, not all residents share Paton’s calm demeanor, particularly in the Cathedral neighborhood where multiple reports of coyote sightings have surfaced since August in Les Sherman Park and Kiwanis Waterfall Park. Concerns peaked when one resident recounted being chased by a coyote in Les Sherman Park. Additional social media posts describe the coyote’s comfort around people and pets, ignoring attempts to scare it away.

City Councilor David Froh had a firsthand experience with a coyote while on a morning run in Les Sherman Park, noting the animal’s boldness in approaching individuals and their pets. Acknowledging wildlife sightings as common, Froh emphasized the need for city staff to respond promptly to persistent sightings to ensure public safety. The City of Regina confirmed receiving reports of two coyotes in the area and is collaborating with conservation officers to safely relocate the animals.

Froh reassured residents that the removal process is conducted with community and animal safety in mind, involving tranquilization instead of firearms. He emphasized the importance of coexisting with wildlife, highlighting the safety of pets and animals. While coyote sightings may cause concern, Froh stressed the need to report such encounters to city authorities promptly.

In light of these sightings, residents are advised to report any sightings of coyotes or other potentially dangerous wildlife to the City of Regina for appropriate action.
