Dr. James Talbot, a former chief medical officer of health for Alberta, conveyed sadness at the failure to maintain the measles-free status achieved in 1998 due to government inaction. He highlighted Alberta’s responsibility for Canada losing its elimination status, citing the significant number of reported cases in the province since the outbreaks began.

Dr. Talbot and other medical professionals criticized the provincial government for its handling of the measles outbreaks, emphasizing the lack of strong messaging on immunization importance and measles risks. Alberta accounted for 38% of Canada’s measles cases, surpassing the entire U.S. case count in July. Dr. Talbot urged the government to acknowledge its shortcomings, apologize to Albertans, and take decisive actions to prevent a recurrence.

The Alberta Medical Association also expressed disappointment, emphasizing the need for robust leadership in public health to combat vaccine hesitancy and improve immunization rates. The government defended its vaccination efforts, reporting a decline in measles cases and a significant increase in vaccination uptake across Alberta. Dr. Natasha Crowcroft from the Public Health Agency of Canada remains optimistic about regaining measles elimination status, emphasizing the importance of building trust in immunization programs.

Dr. Karina Top, a pediatric infectious diseases specialist, highlighted the collective failure to address declining vaccination rates and stressed the importance of proactive measures to prevent further outbreaks.
