Within a remarkably short period, the horror sensation created by YouTuber Kane Parsons grossed $212 million worldwide, with a substantial $135 million coming from the U.S. and Canada. This achievement dethroned last year’s “Marty Supreme,” led by Timothée Chalamet, which previously held A24’s top position with $191 million in earnings.
“Backrooms” not only broke A24 records but also set new industry benchmarks. Parsons, aged 20, made history as the youngest director to lead the box office and the youngest to helm a project for A24. The film’s opening weekend success, raking in $81 million in North America, was unprecedented for the studio. Furthermore, it claimed the title of the largest original horror debut ever and became A24’s highest-grossing film domestically in just four days, reaching the $200 million revenue milestone.
All these achievements were accomplished with a modest $10 million budget, showcasing the film’s remarkable performance. Before its cinematic success, “Backrooms” originated as a personal project on Parsons’ laptop, utilizing 3D animation software. Initially, it gained traction as a viral 22-video found-footage series on YouTube in 2022, amassing over 25 million views and cultivating a dedicated fan base.
Parsons explained in an interview with The Independent that his meticulous attention to detail, honed from his YouTube background, played a crucial role in the film’s development. A24 recognized the series’ potential and enlisted Parsons to expand his concept into a feature film exploring liminal spaces.
The production team behind “Backrooms,” including A24, Chernin Entertainment, Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps, and James Wan, ensured a seamless transition from the online series to the big screen. The film’s storyline, revolving around a furniture store owner discovering a mysterious door leading to endless empty rooms, features a stellar cast, including Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve.
