“Woman Completes 5,700km Hike Across U.S. and Canada”

Featured in:

An American woman completed a remarkable journey, hiking a total of 5,700 kilometers across the U.S. and Canada in a span of five months. As she neared the end of her adventure, she received unexpected assistance from a group of snowmobilers from British Columbia who were relaxing in their cabin.

Jessica Guo meticulously documented her extensive trek along the Continental Divide Trail in the western United States and the Great Divide Trail in the Canadian Rockies over a period exceeding 150 days from April to September. Initially, Guo kept her expedition private, sharing it only with close friends and family. However, she later began sharing her experiences on social media and through a newsletter, amassing thousands of followers.

Guo proudly claimed the title of being the first woman to complete both trails simultaneously during a single journey, with documented evidence placing her as the fourth person to achieve this feat.

Expressing her satisfaction, Guo mentioned in an interview with Sarah Penton on CBC’s Radio West that she was deeply moved by the impact her journey had on others. Many individuals reached out to her, expressing how she inspired them to explore the outdoors and embark on their hiking adventures.

The culmination of Guo’s epic expedition led her to Kakwa Provincial Park northeast of Prince George, British Columbia. On the 152nd day of her journey, she aimed to hike towards Prince George to reunite with her parents the following day.

During her journey, Guo encountered Greg Redmond and his friends from the Kakwa Park Snowmobile Club, who have been engaging in recreational activities in the area since the 1980s. Initially hoping for a ride to complete her trek, Guo approached their cabin. Although the group wasn’t heading to Prince George that evening, they kindly offered her dinner and accommodation to ensure she didn’t continue her hike in the dark, citing concerns about the rough terrain, mud, steep banks, and possible encounters with grizzly bears.

A quick bond formed between Guo and the group as they exchanged stories of their mountain adventures. The next day, two of the men drove Guo to a trailhead where she embarked on the final 14-kilometer stretch to meet her parents.

Reflecting on her experience, Guo emphasized the shared love for the outdoors that connected her with individuals like Greg, who primarily enjoys snowmobiling, while her passion lies in walking and hiking.
