The UFC Freedom 250 event, which took place at the White House in June, was deemed a major success by TKO officials. However, the financial results paint a different picture.
TKO Group Holdings, the parent company of UFC, disclosed that they invested approximately $60 million US in production expenses for the June 14 event, which was highly anticipated within the organization. Despite the excitement surrounding the fight card, during the company’s recent earnings call, Chief Financial Officer Andrew Schleimer revealed that the company incurred a loss of around $30 million for the grand spectacle. The event was organized to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States and President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday.
Schleimer explained to investors that the company faced significantly elevated costs, although they managed to offset some through global partnership deals. Notably, no tickets were sold for the event, resulting in zero live event revenue. The financial outcome, as predicted, led to a substantial loss of approximately $30 million, impacting UFC’s margins significantly.
The mixed martial arts event attracted over 34 million viewers worldwide and featured a seven-fight card where each bout ended in a knockout or technical knockout, a first in UFC history. Fourteen top fighters competed in the cage set up on the White House’s South Lawn, in front of an audience of about 4,300 individuals, including members of Congress, business leaders, military personnel, and administration officials, making it a “once-in-a-generation celebration of the American fighting spirit.”
Despite the financial setback, TKO’s CEO, Ari Emanuel, praised the event’s success during the earnings call, highlighting the exposure, media coverage, audience growth, and overall fan experience it provided. Other company executives also lauded the event for generating over $1 billion in earned media value and strengthening commercial partnerships.
However, despite the positive feedback, UFC President and CEO Dana White, who is a close friend of Trump, announced that there are no plans to repeat the event at the White House due to the exorbitant costs involved. White expressed his admiration for the experience but stated that the company cannot afford a similar event in the future.
