Victor Willis, the lead singer of Village People known for co-writing the disco hits “Y.M.C.A.” and “Macho Man” in the 1970s, has passed away at the age of 74. The group confirmed his death on their official Facebook page, expressing deep sadness over the loss. Willis’s wife, Karen-Huff Willis, also shared the news on social media, requesting privacy during this difficult time.

Born in Dallas on July 1, 1951, Willis was a versatile musician and actor. In 1977, he capitalized on the disco trend by joining Village People, a group created with producer Jacques Morali and Henri Belolo. The iconic band, comprising members dressed as various characters like a biker, construction worker, cop, cowboy, and Indigenous chief, gained fame with their self-titled debut album released in 1977.

Village People’s success soared with hits like “Y.M.C.A.” and “In the Navy,” becoming staples at parties, dances, and events worldwide. The catchy tunes, especially “Y.M.C.A.,” known for its infectious chorus and dance routine, were recognized by the U.S. Congress and inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Despite legal battles over song ownership, Willis remained dedicated to his music career. In 2015, a federal jury granted him 50% copyright ownership of 13 Village People songs in the U.S., including “Y.M.C.A.” Willis, who faced personal struggles in the past, expressed gratitude for turning his life around and finding success.

In a recent event, Willis, the sole original member of Village People, performed for U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio alongside the group, showcasing their enduring legacy through hits like “Y.M.C.A.” and “Happy Birthday.” Willis’s contribution to the music industry and his impact on popular culture will be remembered and cherished by fans worldwide.
