Today marks a significant milestone for fans of extravagant talent showcases and eccentric musical acts as Canada confirms its participation in the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest. This exciting announcement came shortly after CBC/Radio-Canada was officially welcomed as a full member of the European Broadcasting Union.
Marie-Philippe Bouchard, the president and CEO of CBC/Radio-Canada, expressed enthusiasm about Canada’s involvement in the world’s largest live music event, coinciding with Canada Day celebrations. The upcoming 71st edition of the contest will be hosted by Bulgaria, offering a platform for aspiring songwriters, singers, and musicians.
The Eurovision Song Contest is renowned for its flamboyant displays, elaborate costumes, and performances that often embrace the wonderfully peculiar. Canadian interest in the event remains substantial, as evidenced by Canada’s high ranking in the “Rest of the World” vote last year. Canadians also represented a significant portion of ticket buyers outside of Europe, with many traveling to attend the semi-finals and grand final in Vienna, Austria.
Martin Green, director of the Eurovision Song Contest, expressed delight in welcoming CBC/Radio-Canada to the Eurovision family, emphasizing the event’s global appeal. Notably, Canada’s involvement marks the first new country to join the contest since Australia in 2015.
Canada has had notable representatives on the Eurovision stage in the past, with Céline Dion’s victory in 1988 being a pivotal moment in her career. Other Canadians, such as Natasha St-Pier and Montreal’s La Zarra, have also showcased their talents in the competition over the years.
Despite its popularity, the Eurovision Song Contest has not been devoid of controversy. Earlier this year, several countries boycotted the event to protest Israel’s participation amidst the conflict in Gaza. While efforts to exclude Israel from the competition were unsuccessful, the issue remains contentious.
CBC/Radio-Canada is set to reveal the process for selecting Canada’s entry for the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest later this year, adding to the anticipation surrounding Canada’s debut in this esteemed musical extravaganza.
