Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed that Ukrainian military forces successfully targeted Iranian-designed Shahed drones in various Middle Eastern countries during the Iran conflict. This action was part of a broader strategy to assist allies in countering the same drones utilized by Russia in Ukraine.
Zelenskyy publicly acknowledged these operations for the first time, emphasizing that Ukrainian forces actively engaged in combat missions abroad using domestically manufactured interceptor drones that have proven effective against the Iranian-designed Shahed drones utilized by Russia in Ukraine. The President clarified that this was not merely a training exercise but a crucial effort to assist in establishing modern air defense systems that are operationally effective.
The defensive operations involving Ukrainian personnel took place before a temporary ceasefire was achieved among Iran, the United States, and Israel in the Middle East. Although Zelenskyy did not specify the exact countries involved, he confirmed that Ukrainian experts operated across multiple nations, aiding in the enhancement of their air defense capabilities. In return for their assistance, Ukraine received weaponry to safeguard its energy infrastructure, as well as supplies of oil, diesel, and financial support in certain instances.
Zelenskyy expressed that these agreements would enhance Ukraine’s energy security and viewed the partnerships as opportunities to promote Kyiv’s defense export capabilities. He emphasized that the collaboration was not solely about financial gains but rather about strengthening security in exchange for contributions to Ukraine’s resilience.
The disclosure of these operations comes amidst concerns that ongoing conflicts in the Middle East could divert Western military support away from Ukraine, particularly in terms of air defense supplies. Zelenskyy reassured that partners continued to provide missiles for Patriot systems, noting the recent arrival of a new batch and ongoing efforts to maintain Ukraine’s air defense capabilities.
Furthermore, Zelenskyy mentioned that he had extended an invitation to U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to visit Kyiv, proposing a trilateral meeting involving Moscow. However, due to current circumstances, the visit remains uncertain, and discussions may potentially occur in a different location. Zelenskyy expressed hope for progress in diplomatic efforts and emphasized the importance of maintaining security guarantees.
As diplomatic talks led by the U.S. show little advancement in resolving key issues, attention has shifted to the Middle East conflict while the Russian and Ukrainian forces continue their confrontations along the extensive front line. Zelenskyy also urged Western allies to reimpose full sanctions on Russian oil, warning against easing restrictions that could bolster Moscow’s war efforts and potentially impact global energy dynamics.
