The head coach of the Swift Current Broncos has stepped down following a Western Hockey League investigation that revealed violations of the league’s conduct standards. Dean DeSilva resigned from his role as head coach after receiving a five-game suspension and a $10,000 fine from the WHL. The league found that DeSilva breached conduct standards during two on-ice incidents while implementing player discipline.
WHL Commissioner Dan Near emphasized accountability within the league’s culture and the importance of maintaining clear and consistent conduct standards for all members. DeSilva’s suspension ran from November 5 to November 11, and his resignation was announced by the Broncos on November 14.
Broncos General Manager Chad Leslie stated that the decision for DeSilva to resign was made with consideration for both parties’ best interests and emphasized the team’s commitment to fostering a positive environment for all players.
This development occurred two years after the Swift Current Broncos and former head coach Devan Praught mutually agreed to part ways following Praught’s suspension for similar conduct violations.
In a separate incident, Peter Anholt, the general manager of the Lethbridge Hurricanes, was suspended by the WHL and fined $10,000 for breaching conduct standards by using intimidating behavior and language during a post-game address to players. Anholt is set to resume his duties on November 26 and acknowledged that his behavior did not meet expectations, committing to upholding higher standards in the future.
Both investigations were initiated by the WHL Respect Line, a confidential tip line for reporting misconduct.
