“The Odyssey” continues to dominate the box office, having amassed $1.1 billion US since its release on July 17. This Greek epic adaptation marks director Christopher Nolan’s highest-grossing film to date, surpassing his previous hits like “The Dark Knight Rises” and “The Dark Knight.” Despite coming close with his 2024 biopic “Oppenheimer,” which earned approximately $975 million US, Nolan’s latest venture has broken records.
In a similar success story, Sony-Marvel’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” exceeded expectations with a whopping $1.67 billion US worldwide earnings after a stellar $360 million US debut weekend. This achievement places it alongside Marvel’s elite, with only “Avengers: Endgame” surpassing the $300 million US mark during its opening weekend.
“Brand New Day” now stands as the second-fastest film to reach $1 billion US, trailing closely behind “Endgame.” Additionally, it currently holds the title of the highest-grossing movie of the year, ahead of “The Odyssey” and “Toy Story 5.”
Looking ahead, “The Odyssey” is set to make its official debut in the lucrative Chinese market, with an anticipated strong reception. Imax screenings have played a significant role in the film’s success, evident in its upcoming Chinese Imax rollout across 800 screens.
The demand for Imax technology has surged globally, with only a limited number of theatres equipped to showcase films in the coveted Imax 70mm format. Nolan’s attachment to Imax is evident, as “The Odyssey” becomes the first movie entirely shot in Imax, setting new records for the company.
Both “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and “The Odyssey” have contributed to Hollywood’s post-pandemic resurgence, with ticket sales outpacing last year by 18.5%. This year has already seen five movies crossing the $1 billion US mark, a significant uptick compared to recent years.
As the summer box office revenue is projected to hit $4 billion US, Hollywood is experiencing a revitalization akin to pre-pandemic levels, with promising signs of a thriving industry once again.
