The recent lunar mission by the Artemis II astronauts resulted in a collection of stunning images, capturing never-before-seen perspectives of the moon and a total solar eclipse. The astronauts were equipped with DSLR cameras by NASA instructors, Paul Reichert and Katrina Willoughby, who provided them with extensive training over a period of several years.
The crew, consisting of Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen, utilized the Nikon D5 DSLR camera during the mission. Known for its durability in space conditions, the Nikon D5 has been a trusted camera model on the International Space Station (ISS) for years, withstanding radiation exposure without issues. Its exceptional low-light performance was particularly beneficial in the dark void of space.
In addition to the Nikon D5, the crew also made use of Nikon Z9 mirrorless cameras and various lenses, including 14-24mm, 80-400mm, and 35mm lenses. Interestingly, the crew incorporated Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max devices into their equipment list, although the large file sizes presented challenges due to limited bandwidth for file transfers.
Unlike past lunar missions that relied on film cameras, the Artemis II astronauts had the convenience of immediate digital image viewing. They also live-streamed video footage using GoPros, offering real-time glimpses of space exploration to audiences on Earth. The excitement among the team in Houston was palpable as they witnessed and shared the captivating images captured during the mission.
