After completing a record-breaking journey of 406,771 kilometers around the moon, Canadian Space Agency (CSA) astronaut Jeremy Hansen, along with NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, are set to discuss their mission with the public. The four astronauts will be holding a media Q&A session from the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, at 2:30 p.m. ET today, which will be broadcast live on CBC.ca.
Since their return to Earth last Friday, the astronauts have undergone medical examinations and debriefings concerning their mission. They have also reunited with their families, receiving warm welcomes and emotional reunions. Victor Glover was greeted by cheering neighbors in League City, Texas, while Christina Koch had an emotional reunion with her dog, Sadie.
On Saturday, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman welcomed the astronauts, along with numerous VIP guests, at Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base in Houston. The event was a significant moment for the crew, who have trained together for years and recently spent 10 days in a capsule together.
Reflecting on their experience, astronaut Reid Wiseman expressed the deep bond formed during the mission and the challenging emotions of being away from home. Despite the difficulties, he emphasized the unique and special experience of being a human on planet Earth.
Returning to work post-mission, astronaut Jeremy Hansen engaged in a simulated lunar surface walk in a lunar spacesuit. He also announced the winner of the Aqualunar Challenge, a Canadian competition aimed at developing water purification solutions for the moon. The Canadian Strategic Missions Corporation emerged as the winner of the $400,000 prize.
NASA is planning to accelerate the launch cadence of Artemis missions, with the goal of establishing a lunar base. The Artemis II crew played a pivotal role in this mission, with Hansen highlighting the collective effort of all those involved in making it a success.
In a reflective moment on stage, Hansen emphasized that the astronauts were a reflection of the larger team behind the mission’s success and encouraged the audience to see themselves in the achievements of the crew.
