Shane Bieber Stays with Blue Jays, Exercises $16M Option

Featured in:

Starting pitcher Shane Bieber has decided to remain with the Toronto Blue Jays for the upcoming season instead of testing free agency. The team announced that he has opted to exercise his $16 million US player option for the 2026 season. Bieber, aged 30, achieved a 4-2 record with a 3.57 earned-run average in his time with Toronto following his trade from the Cleveland Guardians mid-season.

His decision secures the Blue Jays’ starting rotation, which is anticipated to feature Kevin Gausman, Trey Yesavage, Jose Berrios, and potentially Eric Lauer. The future of free agents Max Scherzer and Chris Bassitt with the team remains uncertain.

During the postseason, Bieber maintained a 2-1 record with a 3.86 ERA. Notably, he secured a pivotal road victory in Game 4 of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers but also faced a setback when allowing a game-winning home run to Will Smith in the 11th inning of a 5-4 defeat at Rogers Centre.

Since his debut in 2018, Bieber has amassed a 66-34 record and a 3.24 ERA. He claimed the American League Cy Young Award in the shortened 2020 season after an impressive 8-1 record with a 1.63 ERA for the Guardians.

Bieber made a strong return for Toronto on Aug. 22, pitching six innings in his first major-league appearance following Tommy John surgery in April 2024. His choice to stay with the Blue Jays for 2026 was unexpected, considering the potential for lucrative long-term contracts elsewhere. By recommitting to Toronto, he aims to further elevate his performance on a team poised for continued success next season.

Toronto’s impressive 94-win season led them to the AL East Division title. The team secured victories against the New York Yankees in the AL Division Series and the Seattle Mariners in the AL Championship Series before their defeat in the World Series against the Dodgers.

Looking ahead, spring training is set to commence in mid-February, with the Blue Jays scheduled to kick off their 2026 season on March 26 against the Athletics at home.
