“Residents Demand Action on Dofasco Emissions”

Featured in:

Residents in Hamilton are calling for accountability from ArcelorMittal Dofasco due to concerns over the company’s emission levels exceeding Ontario’s air-quality regulations. Jochen Bezner, a Hamilton resident and member of Dofasco’s community liaison committee, along with another resident, have urged the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Parks (MECP) to investigate the steelmaker for allegedly emitting dangerous pollutants above regulatory standards.

According to Ecojustice, an environmental law charity, and a Hamilton lawyer, the request for investigation was formally submitted. Bezner emphasized that the goal is not to shut down Dofasco but to ensure responsible practices. The city already faces challenges with high concentrations of cancer-causing pollutants, such as benzene and benzo[a]pyrene, making the situation more critical.

Ecojustice highlighted that Dofasco’s plant, surrounded by neighborhoods with around 82,000 residents, reportedly exposes the community to elevated levels of harmful contaminants. Previously, Dofasco operated under exemptions allowing higher emissions of certain pollutants, but these exemptions expired in June 2023, raising concerns about compliance with general air regulations.

MECP’s delay in finalizing a new industry standard has left Dofasco operating in a “grey zone,” potentially breaching compliance standards. Ecojustice urged the province to enforce existing air-quality regulations to ensure Dofasco aligns with emission reduction efforts.

Recent emissions reports revealed significant overages in pollutants, including benzo[a]pyrene, benzene, sulfur dioxide, and manganese compounds, compared to permitted levels. Meanwhile, Dofasco’s progress in its decarbonization project, aimed at reducing air pollution, has faced setbacks, with missed milestones and challenges meeting targets.

MECP is expected to respond to the investigation request soon, with the ministry emphasizing the importance of reducing emissions and enforcing appropriate standards. Dofasco’s commitment to compliance and the decarbonization project’s significance for the company’s future were acknowledged, although challenges like high tariffs have impacted progress. Residents hope that stricter regulations will prompt Dofasco to prioritize environmental responsibilities.
