The UN weather agency’s projections suggest a nearly 100% certainty of El Niño persisting until February 2027, driven by abnormally warm Pacific Ocean temperatures, marking the first time such a high degree of confidence has been expressed by the WMO.

El Niño, characterized by periodic warming of sea surface temperatures in the eastern Pacific due to weakened trade winds, occurs naturally every two to seven years and typically lasts up to 12 months, triggering intense precipitation and drought cycles across Latin America. This year’s El Niño episode has already impacted agricultural commodities in tropical regions, exacerbating a severe food crisis in Central America’s Dry Corridor.
The WMO anticipates the peak of this El Niño event towards the year’s end, with lingering effects expected to extend into 2027, resulting in elevated global temperatures next year. Saulo affirmed that the WMO is enhancing its readiness and early warning mechanisms in anticipation of the potential repercussions.
