Mystikal, the rapper previously nominated for multiple Grammy Awards in the early 2000s, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for raping a woman at his home in Louisiana in 2022. Born Michael Lawrence Tyler, Mystikal pleaded guilty to third-degree rape in March with a maximum sentence of 20 years, which is five years less than the potential punishment for the crime. Initially facing a charge of first-degree rape, which carries a life sentence, he later sought to retract his guilty plea shortly before his sentencing hearing, citing insufficient time to consider the consequences.

During the court proceedings, the victim provided a statement urging the judge to impose the maximum sentence on Mystikal. She recounted harrowing details of physical assault and rape allegedly perpetrated by the rapper at his residence in Prairieville, located approximately 29 kilometers from Baton Rouge. In response to the victim’s plea for the maximum penalty, Mystikal acknowledged that such actions would indeed warrant the harshest punishment.

Despite the gravity of the situation, Mystikal’s legal representative did not offer immediate commentary on the matter. Since his arrest in 2022, Mystikal has been detained without bond at the Ascension Parish Jail. The Louisiana-based artist gained national prominence in the 1990s and achieved commercial success with his 2000 hit “Shake Ya A**,” which was a Grammy-nominated track in the best rap solo performance category.

In a previous legal entanglement in 2003, Mystikal pleaded guilty to sexual battery and received a six-year prison sentence. That same year, he secured Grammy nominations in two categories: best rap album for “Tarantula” and best male rap solo performance for his single “Bouncin’ Back (Bumpin’ Me Against The Wall).”
