“Live Nation Faces Backlash Over Ticket Prices”

Featured in:

Live Nation Entertainment acknowledges the widespread discontent among music and sports enthusiasts who hold the company, along with its subsidiary Ticketmaster, responsible for exorbitant ticket prices. Despite this perception, the conglomerate’s executive vice-president emphasizes that they are not monopolistic and should not be subject to dismantling.

In a comprehensive interview conducted at Live Nation’s headquarters in New York, Dan Wall addressed the public’s frustrations regarding the live entertainment sector, particularly the association with Ticketmaster due to its prevalent ticket sales. Wall defended his company in light of a recent pivotal ruling by a U.S. federal jury, which found Ticketmaster and Live Nation culpable for various infractions, including maintaining an anti-competitive monopoly and improperly interlinking tour promotions, ticketing, and venue operations.

Expressing disappointment with the verdict, Wall highlighted the strategic move by the plaintiff Attorneys General and the federal government to opt for a jury trial, which he believes favored their case against a corporate entity. Wall indicated that the presented evidence only demonstrated Ticketmaster’s share of 20% in the primary ticketing market, challenging the characterization of this as a monopoly.

Regarding the White House involvement, Wall confirmed that Live Nation’s CEO engaged in discussions with officials to negotiate a settlement with the Department of Justice (DOJ) to prevent a division of the company. However, several states resisted this agreement, pushing for more severe penalties, including potential divestiture.

U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal, following an investigation into Live Nation and Ticketmaster, criticized the company’s methods, labeling the DOJ settlement as a product of a biased process influenced by lobbyists. Blumenthal advocated for dismantling the conglomerate to restore competition in the market.

The surge in ticket prices for marquee artists like Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars, and others has sparked public outcry and confusion. Wall reiterated Live Nation’s commitment to affordability, attributing the escalating prices to the heightened demand for live entertainment and the increased scale and complexity of stadium tours and concerts.

Addressing the pricing strategies, Wall acknowledged Live Nation’s endorsement of dynamic pricing and “platinum” ticket tiers, emphasizing that these practices are industry-wide and aimed at benefitting artists and fans by offering diverse pricing options. He clarified that the system does not utilize real-time algorithmic pricing but rather relies on market data to estimate consumer willingness to pay.

As the U.S. anti-trust case garners international attention, Canadian regulators are closely monitoring the developments. The Consumer Council of Canada has taken steps to advocate for the division of Live Nation and Ticketmaster, echoing sentiments of Canadian fans who are seeking a more competitive market and restitution for past overcharging instances.
