Elijah Roche netted a late 88th-minute goal, and Marius Aiyenero successfully converted a penalty in stoppage time as Canada secured a remarkable 2-1 victory over Uganda at the FIFA U-17 World Cup. It marked Canada’s first-ever win in nine appearances at the tournament.

Uganda initially took the lead with James Bogere’s goal in the 25th minute. However, Roche equalized for Canada with a powerful header from Aghilas Sadek’s corner kick. Later, John Asiimwe of Uganda was penalized for a foul on Aiyenero in the box, leading to Aiyenero’s winning penalty kick in the 98th minute.

Canada’s head coach, Mike Vitulano, expressed pride in the team’s achievement, emphasizing their resilience and unity in securing the victory. The Canadian squad, now 1-20-4 in U-17 World Cup history, displayed determination and character in overcoming the deficit.

Looking ahead, Canada will face France and Chile in upcoming Group K matches. France, a former U-17 World Cup champion, defeated Chile 2-0 in their recent encounter.

Throughout the match, Canada dominated possession but struggled to convert opportunities, while Uganda posed a threat on the counterattack. The game intensified as Uganda tired towards the end, allowing Canada to capitalize on their chances.

The FIFA U-17 World Cup, featuring 48 teams and 104 matches, is ongoing at the Aspire Zone complex in Doha, Qatar. The tournament will conclude on November 27 at Khalifa International Stadium.

Notably, eight Canadian starters are affiliated with Major League Soccer (MLS) clubs, showcasing the growing talent within North American soccer. In contrast, all Uganda’s starting players represent domestic clubs.

Despite Uganda’s strong performance, Canada’s defensive efforts, exemplified by Roche’s crucial interventions, proved pivotal in securing the historic victory. The match witnessed intense moments, including video reviews and missed penalty claims, underscoring the competitive nature of the tournament.

Both Canada and Uganda earned their spots in the U-17 World Cup through rigorous qualification processes, highlighting the dedication and talent of young footballers globally. The tournament has a rich history of showcasing future football stars, with renowned players like Spain’s Pedri and Brazil’s Neymar having graced the U-17 stage in the past.
