“Italian Researcher Unearths Canadian WWII Hero’s Legacy”

Featured in:

On a typical summer Sunday afternoon, Michele Facchini would not usually be found in the scorching fields northwest of Ravenna, Italy, using a metal detector. However, during an unexpected outing on July 6, he uncovered a connection to Hector McDonald, a Canadian soldier who perished in 1944.

Facchini, a 49-year-old Second World War researcher, often spends his weekends at home reading Canadian soldiers’ diaries and studying battle maps. On this particular day, he explored the outskirts of Russi near the Lamone River, where Canadian troops had fought in December 1944 to drive out Nazi forces.

While using his metal detector, Facchini discovered remnants of bullets and shrapnel, leading to a significant find. A local farmer presented him with items stored in a warehouse, including a duffel bag bearing the name and regiment numbers of a soldier.

This serendipitous discovery reignited a long-forgotten story, connecting McDonald with his family after 81 years. McDonald, a lance-sergeant, fought courageously in various battles during the Italian campaign, ultimately losing his life near the Lamone River.

Despite the absence of a surviving photograph, wartime documents provide insights into McDonald’s life and service. His dedication and sacrifice are commemorated through this rediscovered artifact, shedding light on his heroic journey and the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country.

Facchini, along with a dedicated group of Second World War researchers, continues to honor the memory of soldiers like McDonald, ensuring their stories are preserved for future generations. The emotional reunion between McDonald’s descendants and his belongings serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought against tyranny during the war.
