Iran Denies Trump’s Claim on Protester Hangings

Featured in:

Iran’s chief prosecutor refuted U.S. President Donald Trump’s assertions that he halted the hangings of 800 detained protesters as “completely untrue.” The death toll from nationwide protests has surged to over 5,000, according to activists, who suspect the actual number of casualties is much higher due to a prolonged internet blackout in Iran.

Tensions persist between the United States and Iran, with an American aircraft carrier group moving closer to the Middle East, a move Trump likened to an “armada.” Despite the military buildup potentially offering the option for strikes, Trump has refrained from taking military action, citing the mass execution of prisoners as a red line alongside the killing of peaceful demonstrators.

While Trump seems to have backtracked on his claims, the possibility of kinetic action remains as military assets are being deployed in the region. Iran’s judiciary has labeled some detainees as “enemies of God,” a charge carrying the death penalty, echoing past mass executions in 1988.

At a UN Human Rights Council session in Geneva, concerns were raised over contradictory statements from Iranian authorities regarding possible executions of protesters. Iran continues to be among the top countries for executions, with over 1,500 reported executions last year, a significant increase from previous years.

In Tehran, the Friday prayer leader criticized Trump, describing him as a “yellow-faced, yellow-haired and disgraced man.” The leader warned of repercussions for U.S. interests in the region if any harm befell Iran.

The U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency reported a death toll of 4,716 demonstrators, 203 government-affiliated individuals, 43 children, and 40 civilians not involved in the protests. More than 27,600 people have been detained in a widespread arrest campaign by Iranian authorities.

The American military has enhanced its presence in the Middle East, including the deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and accompanying warships. Trump mentioned the possibility of taking action against Iran if necessary, highlighting previous talks over Iran’s nuclear program and threats of military strikes.

Iran’s government provided an initial death toll of 3,117, categorizing the deceased as civilians, security forces, and “terrorists.” The true extent of the casualties remains challenging to verify independently due to restricted internet access and communication barriers.

The escalating situation underscores the ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Iran, with the specter of military action looming amidst a backdrop of widespread protests and unrest in Iran.
