Iran and U.S. Reach Agreement on Nuclear Principles

Featured in:

Iran and the U.S. have come to an agreement on key “guiding principles” in discussions to settle their longstanding nuclear disagreement, according to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi. Despite this, Aragchi stressed that a final deal is not imminent. Following Aragchi’s remarks, oil futures dropped, with the benchmark Brent crude contract falling over one percent. These comments from Aragchi helped alleviate concerns of conflict in the region, where the U.S. has positioned a battle force to pressure Tehran for concessions.

Aragchi stated to Iranian media in Geneva that various ideas were deliberated, leading to a general consensus on some guiding principles after thorough discussions. A U.S. official mentioned that Iran would present detailed proposals within the next two weeks to bridge the gaps in the nuclear negotiations. The official, who chose to remain anonymous, highlighted that although progress was achieved, there are still numerous details to be addressed.

The indirect talks involving U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, U.S. President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, and Aragchi, were facilitated by Oman. Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi emphasized that while significant work remains, both Iran and the U.S. have identified clear next steps. Concurrently, Iranian state media announced Iran’s intention to temporarily close a portion of the Strait of Hormuz due to security measures, coinciding with military drills by Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards in the area.

In response to Trump’s remarks hinting at regime change in Iran, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei asserted that any U.S. attempts to overthrow his government would be unsuccessful. Khamenei warned against underestimating Iran’s capabilities, emphasizing that even the world’s strongest army could face severe repercussions.

Araghchi expressed optimism regarding the talks, describing a new opportunity and hoping for sustainable solutions that acknowledge Iran’s legitimate rights. Trump, on the other hand, suggested indirect involvement in the Geneva discussions and indicated Iran’s interest in reaching a deal. He underscored the potential ramifications of failing to reach an agreement, citing previous military actions that could have been avoided with diplomatic resolutions.

Following airstrikes by the U.S. and Israel on Iranian nuclear facilities last June, Iran halted uranium enrichment activities. The recent meeting occurred at the Omani ambassador’s residence to the United Nations amid heightened security measures. Talks have been influenced by broader issues beyond nuclear concerns, with Washington seeking to address Iran’s missile arsenal. However, Tehran has maintained its stance on discussing only nuclear limitations in exchange for sanctions relief, refusing to compromise on its missile program.

Khamenei reiterated Iran’s firm position on its missile capabilities, dismissing negotiations on their type and range in relation to the U.S. An Iranian official emphasized the pivotal role of realistic demands and the lifting of debilitating sanctions by the U.S. in ensuring the success of the Geneva talks.

The U.S. military is reportedly preparing for an extended engagement with Iran if ordered by Trump, signaling tensions between the two nations. While the U.S. and Israel perceive Iran’s nuclear ambitions as a threat, Iran asserts its nuclear program is exclusively peaceful, despite enriching uranium beyond energy requirements. Iran is a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, committing to civilian nuclear power and cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency. On the contrary, Israel, not part of the treaty, maintains a policy of nuclear ambiguity to deter potential adversaries.
