This weekend’s debut of the Enhanced Games in Las Vegas features the participation of prominent Canadian athletes alongside others from around the world. The event, initiated as a concept in June 2023, has garnered various monikers like the “Doping Olympics” and the “Steroid Olympics,” depending on differing perspectives.
The Enhanced Games, a global multi-sport event founded by Australian entrepreneur Aron D’Souza, permits athletes to compete while utilizing performance-enhancing drugs banned in conventional international sports. D’Souza described the games as a “movement” at a previous event, emphasizing transparency, science, and choice in embracing the full spectrum of human potential.
Taking place against the vibrant backdrop of the Las Vegas strip this Sunday, the event anticipates around 2,500 exclusive spectators. Winners of each competition stand to receive $250,000 US, with a pledge of $1 million US for breaking world records in specific disciplines, although these achievements will not be officially recognized by traditional sports governing bodies.
Among the 42 global athletes participating in events such as track and field, weightlifting, strongman, and swimming, two Canadians, Mitchell Hooper and Boady Santavy, are notable contenders. Santavy, a two-time Olympic weightlifter and World’s Strongest Man champion, expressed his motivation to compete, citing the long-standing doping issues within his sport as a driving factor.
The controversy surrounding the Enhanced Games has drawn criticism from bodies like the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the International Olympics Committee (IOC), who view the event as endorsing doping practices and potentially normalizing the use of harmful performance-enhancing substances.
