Featured in:

Cris Derksen, a prominent Cree cellist and composer, is being fondly remembered as a pioneer in the Indigenous classical music scene. Derksen, aged 45, tragically passed away in a car accident on a highway in northern Alberta while returning home from their father’s funeral in Tallcree First Nation near Fort Vermilion, Alberta.

The news of Derksen’s sudden death was confirmed by their booking agency, AIM Booking Agency, in a statement expressing deep sadness. Reports indicate that Derksen’s wife and frequent musical collaborator, Rebecca Benson, was critically injured in the crash and is currently hospitalized.

Following the incident on Highway 44, both drivers involved sustained serious injuries, with Derksen, who was in the passenger seat, sadly succumbing to their injuries. Tributes poured in from various individuals and institutions, including the Orchestre Métropolitain of Montreal, honoring Derksen’s unique artistry and genuine personality.

Known for their diverse musical style blending classical string music, electronica, folk, and traditional Indigenous songs, Derksen was acclaimed nationally and internationally for their genre-defying compositions. The National Arts Centre lauded Derksen for bringing a distinct voice to contemporary music by merging classical training, Indigenous traditions, and electronic elements.

Having roots in Tallcree, Treaty 8 territory in Alberta, Derksen’s music was a reflection of their dual Cree and Mennonite heritage. Their compositions, often incorporating traditional melodies and powwow elements, challenged the boundaries of classical music and attracted a broad audience.

Derksen’s significant contributions to the classical music scene were highlighted by the UBC School of Music, emphasizing their advocacy for Indigenous artists and groundbreaking impact on modern music. Colleagues and friends praised Derksen for their mentorship and leadership within the Indigenous classical music community, recognizing the void left by their untimely passing.

The music world mourns the loss of Cris Derksen, whose legacy of innovation and connection through music will continue to resonate worldwide.
