“Autonomous Sail Drones Enhance Coast Guard Operations”

Featured in:

Two bright orange autonomous sail drones are currently afloat on Lake Erie as part of a new initiative by the U.S. Coast Guard. Launched in May, these drones are the first of their kind in the Great Lakes and are equipped with 360-degree cameras. The U.S. Coast Guard has highlighted their versatile functions, including aiding in search and rescue operations, responding to environmental spills, and supporting law enforcement activities.

The cameras on the drones are constantly monitored by U.S. Coast Guard personnel, who can adjust the drones manually when needed. Despite this monitoring, officials clarify that the footage captured is not recorded. Lt. Junior Grade Samuel Rodriguez Garcia from the U.S. Coast Guard emphasized that the primary purpose of the drones is to enhance situational awareness in real-time rather than for surveillance.

According to Garcia, both U.S. and Canadian agencies, including law enforcement bodies, can access the drone technology through appropriate channels. He mentioned that one of the key roles of the drones is to assist in border security and combat cross-border criminal activities. While the Canadian Coast Guard is not directly involved in the U.S. sail drone program, they maintain a strong collaborative relationship with the U.S. Coast Guard to bolster maritime security efforts.

The sail drones are an integral part of the Great Lakes marine security operation, operating around the clock alongside various government law enforcement agencies. Garcia specified that the drones primarily operate within U.S. waters in the Great Lakes and are equipped with collision prevention technology to avoid vessels. Boaters are advised to maintain a safe distance of approximately 100 meters from the sail drones. Moreover, the deployment of the drones is seasonal, with retrieval taking place once ice formation begins on the water.
