Five-Year-Old Boy Taken by ICE in Minnesota

Featured in:

After returning home from preschool with his father, a five-year-old boy in Columbia Heights, Minnesota, was taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. The superintendent of Columbia Heights Public Schools, Zena Stenvik, described how the child, Liam Conejo Ramos, was used as a tactic to apprehend his father. Despite pleas from another adult at the residence to care for the child, the agents proceeded to involve the young boy in their operation, leading him to knock on the door in an attempt to determine if anyone else was present.

Following the incident, both Liam and his father were detained at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center in Texas, as confirmed by the family’s attorney, Marc Prokosch. Expressing concern for the well-being of children and families seeking asylum, Prokosch condemned the treatment as inhumane and unacceptable.

The detainment occurred amidst heightened immigration enforcement in Minneapolis, a situation that has sparked protests and tensions in the region. The Department of Homeland Security clarified that ICE’s focus was on arresting Liam’s father, identified as Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias, an individual described as an “illegal alien from Ecuador.”

Contrary to claims that the child was targeted, ICE officials stated that Liam was safeguarded while his father attempted to evade arrest. The agency emphasized that parents are given the option to remain with their children or designate a safe guardian for them in such circumstances.

Responding to the incident, U.S. Vice-President JD Vance explained that Liam was not arrested but taken into custody due to his father’s actions. The justification given was to ensure the child’s safety in light of the situation.

Public figures including Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz criticized the incident, denouncing the reported detainment of the child. Gov. Walz called for an end to what he described as a campaign of retribution by the administration.

The circumstances surrounding Liam’s detainment have raised questions about the treatment of children in such operations. School officials highlighted that Liam was not the only student from their district targeted by ICE agents, with several other instances of apprehensions involving students and their families.

As the community seeks answers and accountability, the Department of Homeland Security’s response to inquiries about the welfare of Liam and other detained children remains pending. The ongoing situation has underscored the challenges and controversies surrounding immigration enforcement practices in the United States.
