He mentioned that their stock of around 80 drones sold out rapidly, indicating high interest from farmers.
Farmers and drone vendors have expressed enthusiasm for the policy change, citing the effectiveness of drones over traditional ground sprayers and planes. Many farmers intend to invest in pesticide-spraying drones in the near future. The advantages of these drones include their ability to operate at night, navigate close to obstacles like trees and powerlines, and handle challenging terrain conditions like mud, as highlighted by Crumly’s interactions with farmers.
The operational simplicity of drones is another appealing factor, as farmers can easily program the drone’s spraying routes and let it operate autonomously. Greg Hill, a farm and ranch owner in southeast Saskatchewan, lauded the potential impact of drones in agriculture, citing the significant crop damage caused by traditional ground sprayers compared to drones.
Although the initial cost of spray drones can be substantial, they are still more cost-effective than high-end ground sprayers. Operational expenses are significantly lower for drones, making them an attractive investment for farmers. However, some farmers, like Hill and Raymond Phillips from Alberta, are cautious due to additional costs such as maintenance, licensing, and equipment necessary for drone operation. Despite these considerations, Phillips anticipates incorporating drones into his farming operations within the next few years, recognizing the evolving landscape of agricultural technology.
