“Devastating Fire Destroys Fish Plant Amid Hurricane Winds”

Featured in:

A devastating fire has completely destroyed the fish plant in St. Mary’s, Newfoundland, amidst severe hurricane-force winds and heavy rainfall. Mayor Steve Ryan reported that the fire was discovered earlier in the night, with him being the first responder at the scene of the plant, operated by St. Mary’s Bay Fisheries. Unfortunately, a significant portion of the building has already been consumed by the flames.

Despite the efforts of three fire crews present, the extreme weather conditions, including winds reaching up to 172 km/h at Cape St. Mary’s, posed formidable challenges. The structure was engulfed in flames before the crews could effectively combat the fire. Sherry Gambin-Walsh, the Liberal MHA for Placentia-St. Mary’s, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, emphasizing the devastating impact on the community and its workforce.

Residents are distraught witnessing their primary source of employment being ravaged by the fire. The plant played a vital role in sustaining the local economy and community well-being. The catastrophic incident has left many struggling to come to terms with the immense loss.
