U.S. Democratic Representatives Joaquin Castro and Jasmine Crockett paid a visit to a five-year-old Ecuadorian boy and his father at a federal detention center in Texas on Wednesday, following the boy’s recent detention by federal agents in Minneapolis. This incident has further fueled criticism of the Trump administration’s immigration policies, particularly drawing attention to the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
During the meeting at the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley near San Antonio, Castro and Crockett met with Liam Conejo Ramos and his father, Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias, for approximately 30 minutes. Meanwhile, outside the facility, Texas state police engaged with demonstrators supporting the detainees.
A widely circulated photo shows the young boy, Liam, wearing a blue winter hat and a Spider-Man backpack during his detention, evoking strong reactions. Castro described Liam as a symbol of the harshness of the ICE and detention systems.
According to Castro, Liam’s father shared that the boy has been experiencing sleep disturbances, asking about his mother and classmates, and expressing his desire to return to school. Castro emphasized the emotional impact of the situation, urging President Trump to consider how he would feel if his own grandchildren were in a similar position.
The visit was part of the Democrats’ efforts to oversee immigration policies and highlight the consequences of the administration’s actions. Liam and his father were taken into custody as part of a broader operation in Minneapolis that has sparked significant protests. The family’s attorney has mentioned Arias’ pending asylum claim, which is being processed in the immigration court at the Dilley detention center.
After the visit, Castro shared a photo on social media showing Liam in his father’s arms with his eyes closed. Crockett, who is vying for the Senate nomination, expressed dismay over the children’s lack of education opportunities at the facility, emphasizing the need for a more humane approach.
Protesters outside the detention center faced a response from Texas state police, who used chemical irritants and pepper balls to disperse the crowd. The tense situation prompted accusations from Castro against Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem for overseeing what he called a “lawless” immigration enforcement system.
Crockett and her Senate primary opponent, James Talarico, are pushing for Noem’s impeachment and have opposed funding bills supporting her department and associated enforcement agencies. The Democrats’ stance on DHS funding has become more resolute following recent tragic events involving ICE agents in Minneapolis.
The ongoing debate reflects the broader national discourse on immigration policies and enforcement practices, with Democrats advocating for more compassionate and accountable approaches in light of these troubling incidents.
