Residents of Old Ottawa South are rejoicing over the installation of new signage that showcases the story of an ancient boulder discovered in their neighborhood during the COVID-19 pandemic. At a recent ceremony in Windsor Park, Bellwood Avenue resident Gauri Sreenivasan emphasized the significance of the boulder, now dubbed the “Bellwood Boulder,” as a point of public education and engagement.
The sign details how the massive erratic rock was left in the area by glaciers around 10,000 years ago and remained hidden beneath Bellwood Avenue until April 2021 when it was unearthed during water pipe replacement work. During the pandemic lockdown, residents, including Sreenivasan and others, found solace and camaraderie around the boulder, which served as a gathering spot and symbol of community resilience.
When there was a proposal to crush the boulder for removal, residents rallied to save it not only for its historical value but also for the unity it brought to the neighborhood during challenging times. Through community efforts, the boulder was successfully relocated to Windsor Park, showcasing the power of collective action and community spirit.
The new signage and the boulder’s preservation stand as a testament to the strength of community bonds and the positive impact of coming together for a shared cause. Residents hope that visitors who read the sign will recognize the influence of community solidarity in preserving the boulder and fostering a sense of togetherness during difficult times.
