“Canada’s Palacio and Brossard to Lead in FIFA Women’s Futsal World Cup”

Featured in:

Goalkeeper Lea Palacio and forward Esther Brossard have been selected to lead Canada in the upcoming FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup happening in the Philippines from November 21 to December 7. Canada finds itself in a tough Group B, along with Spain, Thailand, and Colombia.

Spain has dominated the UEFA Women’s Futsal Championship, while Thailand and Colombia have shown strong performances in their respective regional tournaments. Notably, Canada secured its spot in the World Cup by clinching the CONCACAF W Futsal Championship earlier this year in Guatemala, defeating Mexico and Panama in the process.

Coach Alexandre Da Rocha, expressing pride in the team’s qualification, aims to maintain that momentum at the World Cup. Futsal, a fast-paced five-a-side indoor game, will see Canada field a squad of 14 players, including standout performers like Palacio and Brossard.

The team is set to depart for the Philippines soon, with matches against Colombia, Thailand, and Spain lined up in the group stage. The tournament format includes knockout stages, with the top two teams from each group advancing.

Female futsal players have long awaited a FIFA championship, with the inaugural Women’s Futsal World Cup finally becoming a reality. In contrast, the Men’s Futsal World Cup has a rich history, with defending champions Brazil leading the pack.

Canada has a storied futsal past, with past participation in the men’s championship. The upcoming Women’s World Cup represents a new chapter for Canadian futsal, with high hopes for a successful campaign.
