A hiker narrowly escaped a charging grizzly bear encounter close to Troll Falls in Kananaskis Country, prompting a bear warning in the area. The incident occurred on Monday, leading to the implementation of the warning for the Bow Valley Wildland Provincial Park and Evan-Thomas Provincial Recreation Area, including popular trails such as Stoney Trail, Skogan Pass Trail, and Hay Meadow Trail near Kananaskis Village.
Despite the advisory, the warning emphasized the potential for bear encounters at any time. John Clarke, a former Kananaskis Country conservation officer, emphasized the importance of carrying bear spray and knowing how to react when encountering wildlife. Clarke advised being prepared for various bear responses, including running away, staying put, climbing a tree, or following individuals.
As bears are emerging from hibernation at this time of year, they are actively seeking food. Bears in well-visited areas like K-Country, Banff, and Jasper are more accustomed to human presence due to frequent interactions compared to more remote areas. Breeding season for bears begins in late spring, with bears preparing for winter by consuming high-fat foods.
To enhance safety, the warning suggested making noise, traveling in groups, monitoring wildlife, leashing pets, carrying bear spray, and securing food in bear-proof containers. Reports of wildlife sightings or incidents can be made to 403-591-7755. Despite efforts to contact the Ministry of Forestry and Parks for comments, no response was received at the time of publication.
Last summer, a Kananaskis-wide bear warning was issued for the first time since 2016, underscoring the importance of vigilance and preparedness in bear country.
