Two additional members of the Iranian national women’s soccer team were provided asylum in Australia, as confirmed by Australia’s Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke on Wednesday. These two individuals have joined five teammates who were granted humanitarian visas a day earlier, according to Burke’s statement in Canberra. Among the recent asylum seekers were a player and a team staff member, who both sought asylum prior to their team’s departure from Australia to Iran.
The team’s departure from Sydney faced disruptions due to protests by Iranian Australians expressing concerns for the women’s safety in Iran. Despite the commotion, the team’s flight departed as scheduled on Tuesday evening. Upon passing through security at the Australian border, each woman was individually approached by Australian officials and interpreters to discuss asylum opportunities. While some players contacted their families in Iran to deliberate on the offer, none of the remaining delegation members chose to stay in Australia.
Those who sought asylum were granted temporary humanitarian visas, which could lead to permanent residency in Australia, according to Burke. He specified that some members of the delegation were not offered asylum due to their ties to Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard.
The Iranian team had arrived in Australia to participate in the Women’s Asian Cup before the conflict in Iran escalated at the end of February. After being eliminated from the tournament, the players faced the dilemma of returning to a war-torn homeland. Australian authorities emphasized that the decision to seek asylum was voluntary, with no coercion or pressure exerted on the individuals.
Australian officials were criticized for not intervening to prevent the women’s departure, but Burke defended the government’s stance, stating that Australia respected individuals’ right to make their own decisions. Concerns regarding potential coercion of one of the women as seen in circulated footage were referred to local law enforcement for investigation.
Throughout the tournament, the Iranian team garnered support and admiration from the Australian public. A prominent football club in Brisbane extended an invitation via social media for the asylum-seeking players to train with their team, showcasing solidarity and inclusivity.
