Aaron Rai Clinches Abu Dhabi Championship in Playoff

Featured in:

In a thrilling finish at the Abu Dhabi Championship, Aaron Rai from England secured victory over Tommy Fleetwood in a playoff with a clutch 10-foot birdie putt after carding a solid 5-under 67. Rai, coming back from a two-month hiatus, claimed his third European Tour title and first win of the year, reminiscent of his triumph over Fleetwood in the 2020 Scottish Open. He previously clinched the Wyndham Championship in August 2004 for his maiden PGA Tour victory.

Rory McIlroy staged a remarkable comeback on the back nine with five consecutive birdies at Yas Links, finishing with a superb 62, tying his personal best on the European Tour. Although he fell just one shot short, McIlroy further solidified his lead in the Race to Dubai, set to conclude the following week.

Fleetwood, vying for his third global title in a standout season highlighted by a stellar performance in the victorious Europe Ryder Cup team, showcased his skills with crucial putts on the 16th and 17th to stay level with Rai. The intense competition saw both players narrowly missing birdie opportunities on the 18th, resulting in a tie at 25-under 263 after Fleetwood’s final-round 66.

The top spot was fiercely contested, with McIlroy and Nicolai Hjogaard from Denmark finishing just a shot behind the leaders, with Hjogaard narrowly missing an eagle chance on the last hole. Rai expressed his elation, stating, “It’s hard to put into words how this feels. It’s amazing to be here.”

Amidst the heated battle on a day conducive to low scores, Rai faced setbacks with missed putts on the 14th and 15th holes, but rebounded strongly with critical birdies on the 16th and 17th to stay in the hunt. The subsequent playoff turned into a short-game showcase, culminating in Rai’s decisive birdie putt for the win over Fleetwood.

Rai’s triumph propelled him from 55th to 9th in the Race to Dubai standings, securing a spot in the upcoming DP World Tour Championship in Dubai. McIlroy, the defending champion, positioned himself for a shot at his seventh Europe No. 1 title with a commendable runner-up finish in Abu Dhabi. Meanwhile, Marco Penge’s impressive performance, closing with a 63 to tie for ninth, leaves him trailing by 767 points in the Race to Dubai, with the winner in Dubai set to earn 2,000 points.

Reflecting on his strategy, McIlroy emphasized his focus on maximizing birdies to maintain his lead, stating, “I just tried to keep my foot down and make as many birdies as possible knowing that, OK, I’m trying to win this tournament but also give myself the biggest cushion possible going into Dubai next week, as well.”
