Featured in:

The Czech Republic claimed their first Group A victory by beating Finland 2-0 in the Olympic women’s ice hockey event on Sunday. Meanwhile, Sweden advanced to the quarter-finals with a 4-0 triumph over France in Group B at Milano Rho Ice Hockey Arena.

Both Finland and the Czech Republic faced challenges at the start of the 2026 Olympic Games. The Czech team suffered a 5-1 defeat in their opener against the U.S. followed by a 4-3 shootout loss to Switzerland. Finland’s initial match was postponed due to four players testing positive for norovirus, and they later lost 5-0 to the U.S.

The Finnish team conceded two goals in the first period against the Czech Republic. Tereza Pištěková and Natálie Mlýnková scored for the Czechs, who managed to maintain their two-goal lead this time.

In the third minute, the Czechs took the lead as Pištěková scored after intercepting the puck in the neutral zone. Despite facing a penalty shortly after, Finland couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity. The Czech Republic extended their lead near the end of the opening period when Mlýnková found the net.

Finland tried to stage a comeback in the second period but was denied by Czech goalie Klára Peslarová, who made 25 saves in the game. Despite Finland’s efforts, they couldn’t break through the Czech defense.

In Group A, the U.S. leads with six points, followed by the Czech Republic with two points. Defending champions Canada have three points, while Switzerland has two. Finland is yet to secure a point, but all five teams will progress to the quarter-finals.

On the other hand, Sweden dominates Group B with nine points from three matches. Germany, Japan, and Italy all have three points after two games, while France remains at the bottom without a point after three defeats.

Sweden’s strong performance included a 4-0 victory over France, with Thea Johansson, Sara Hjalmarsson, Hanna Thuvik, and Lisa Johansson finding the net. The Swedish team showcased their offensive prowess, outscoring opponents 14-1 so far in the tournament.

Sweden, aiming for their first medal since 2006, has a youthful roster with players eager to make an impact. Coach Ulf Lundberg expressed confidence in his team’s attitude and determination to compete at the highest level. Sweden’s upcoming match against Japan will be crucial as they seek to continue their winning streak in the preliminary round.

Overall, both the Czech Republic and Sweden displayed impressive performances in their respective matches, with high hopes for success as the Olympic women’s ice hockey competition progresses.
