Alleged ISIS Supporters Detained for NYC Bomb Plot

Featured in:

Two individuals who carried explosives to a demonstration outside the mayor’s residence in New York City revealed that they were motivated by the Islamic State extremist organization, according to a legal complaint. Emir Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi were detained without bail following their arraignment on Monday, facing charges such as attempting to aid a terrorist group and using a weapon of mass destruction. Although their attorneys did not request bail at the arraignment, they may do so in the future.

The handmade explosive devices, which were not detonated, were thrown during heated counterprotests against an anti-Islamic rally led by Jake Lang, a far-right activist critical of New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, the first Muslim to hold the position. FBI’s New York office head, James Barnacle, condemned Balat and Kayumi for attempting to instill fear and inflict widespread suffering with their alleged terrorist act targeting an elected city official’s premises.

During the brief court session, the men remained silent, but Kayumi smirked and glanced at Balat when it was mentioned in the complaint that they were acting in support of the Islamic State. Balat, 18, reportedly confessed to pledging allegiance to the extremist group, while Kayumi, 19, claimed affiliation with the Islamic State, as stated in the complaint. Balat, in response to questioning by officers, expressed intentions for a more significant impact than the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing.

Emir Balat’s lawyer, Mehdi Essmidi, described his client as a high school senior from the Philadelphia area facing personal challenges. Kayumi’s attorney, Michael Arthus, urged prosecutors to avoid making prejudicial statements due to the extensive media coverage surrounding the case. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that neither suspect had a criminal record.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi denounced the actions, affirming that the authorities will not tolerate the threatening ideologies of ISIS endangering the nation. An automated license plate reader captured Balat and Kayumi entering New York City from New Jersey shortly before the incident, with Kayumi’s mother reporting him missing earlier that day. The suspects’ vehicle, registered to one of Balat’s relatives, was discovered close to the arrest location, containing materials suggesting bomb-making capabilities.

Mayor Mamdani emphasized that the suspects, both residents of Pennsylvania, had traveled to New York City to incite violence, although he and his spouse were absent during the protest. Police Commissioner Tisch clarified that there was no connection between the suspects’ actions and the ongoing conflict in Iran, highlighting the religious differences between the Islamic State and Iran.

Following the chaotic events at the protest, including the deployment of the explosive devices, arrests were made, with one individual facing charges for assaulting counterprotesters. Despite the disturbing incident, three individuals detained were released without charges. Jake Lang, the organizer of the initial protest, has a history of involvement in controversial events and has been linked to previous legal issues.
