“Canadian Senators Push for Ban on Sports Betting Ads”

Featured in:

Two Canadian senators are urging the government to prohibit advertisements for sports betting across the country. In a joint letter to the Prime Minister, Senators Percy Downe and Marty Deacon are requesting the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to enforce a ban on all promotions related to sports gambling applications and websites. This initiative has garnered support from 40 other senators.

The letter emphasizes that individuals of all age groups who are exposed to a continuous flow of these advertisements are being persuaded to transform their mobile devices into “pocket-sized casinos.” It also cites a recent CBC Marketplace report revealing that gambling messages occupy, on average, 21% of the total broadcast time of a sporting event.

Senator Downe, representing Charlottetown, expresses concerns that the situation has worsened following the amendments to Bill C-218 in 2021, which sanctioned single-event sports betting. He highlights the shift towards betting on specific outcomes within sports events rather than merely predicting the game’s final result.

Acknowledging the partial restrictions already in place, such as bans on featuring sports personalities in gambling ads, Senator Downe advocates for more stringent measures from the government. Drawing a parallel to the ban on cigarette advertisements, he argues that the societal harm caused by excessive sports betting promotions outweighs any potential benefits.

Elizabeth Stephen, a counseling therapist based in Halifax, underscores the vulnerability of young individuals to sports betting advertisements and suggests the necessity of implementing guidelines to regulate such promotions, even if a complete ban is not enforced. She emphasizes the pervasive influence of gambling-related content in professional sports broadcasts on developing minds.

Charlottetown MP Sean Casey echoes the concerns raised in the senators’ letter, emphasizing the public health implications and social harms associated with widespread gambling promotion. While supporting the efforts of Bill S-211 aimed at regulating sports betting advertising, he recognizes the senators’ call for a total ban on such promotions.

In conclusion, while there are ongoing legislative efforts to address the issue, the debate revolves around striking a balance between regulating sports betting advertisements and potentially imposing a complete ban to mitigate the adverse impact on society.
