A group of researchers at a newly established field station on an island near Nova Scotia’s South Shore is working to enhance knowledge about white sharks in the area. The team, led by Nigel Hussey, a professor at the University of Windsor, is utilizing various tracking technologies to monitor the movement of white sharks. In their inaugural year of operation, they tagged 16 white sharks off the coast of Nova Scotia, and they are preparing for the 2026 tagging expedition starting this weekend.
The Tancook Islands Marine Field Station has introduced its own tracker, allowing the public to follow the tagged sharks from previous years and upcoming tagging missions. However, the complexity of Canada’s permit system for working with these animals poses challenges to their research efforts.
Hussey emphasized the need for improved capacity to handle white sharks in Atlantic Canada swiftly to support their research goals. The field station was established by Hussey and his wife, Anna, following Hussey’s participation in a tagging expedition conducted by Ocearch in Atlantic Canada in 2018.
The initiative to establish a research base in Nova Scotia stemmed from the surprising discovery of white sharks, prompting the need to study their behavior and impact on the ecosystem while in the region. The research aims to uncover migration patterns, congregation areas, population size, and ecological consequences associated with white sharks.
Through the use of various tag technologies, including satellite tags, the field station is gaining insights into white shark movements. Hussey anticipates that by the end of the summer, they will be able to identify preliminary white shark hot spots in Atlantic Canada.
Despite progress in their research, Hussey highlighted the challenges posed by the permitting system, which requires special permits from Fisheries and Oceans Canada due to the endangered status of white sharks. The process of obtaining permits annually, coupled with restrictions on research activities, complicates their ability to conduct comprehensive, long-term monitoring programs.
The field station is not only advancing scientific research but also contributing to the community by involving locals like David Baker, a lobster fisherman and Tancook resident, in the research activities. Baker expressed gratitude for the station’s presence, emphasizing the importance of scientific research in understanding the increased shark presence in the area.
Looking ahead, Hussey envisions expanding the field station to include an educational center for the public to learn about sharks, potentially supporting economic growth on the island. The station’s efforts to engage with the community and foster scientific inquiry underscore its significance beyond research alone.
