After wrapping up Thursday’s practice session, Kent Maugeri, the special teams coordinator for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, was actively moving around the field. Maugeri is responsible for managing the kicking and return game for the team, which involves a significant portion of the roster.
Reflecting on his coaching role, Maugeri emphasized his focus on being a top-notch teacher and guiding the players towards success. He highlighted the importance of setting high standards while equipping the team with the necessary skills to excel on the field.
During games, Maugeri stays in communication with head coach Corey Mace to make key decisions. Mace emphasized the team’s commitment to special teams play, acknowledging the efforts of both core special team players and starters from offense and defense who go the extra mile for their teammates.
Having joined the Roughriders in 2016, Maugeri is the longest-serving member of the coaching staff. Initially hired as an offensive assistant by Chris Jones from Lindenwood University, Maugeri was later promoted by former coach Craig Dickenson to lead the special teams in 2022.
Despite working under his third head coach in 10 seasons, Maugeri has adapted to changes and garnered recognition from his current boss for his dedication and contributions to the team.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders are set to face the Montreal Alouettes in the 112th Grey Cup, with Maugeri playing a crucial role in the team’s preparations for the championship game.
