Former South Korean First Lady Kim Keon Hee Jailed for Chanel Bag Bribery

Featured in:

A former first lady of South Korea, Kim Keon Hee, has been sentenced to one year and eight months in jail for accepting Chanel bags and a diamond pendant from Unification Church officials in exchange for political favors. The court acquitted Kim of stock price manipulation and violating the political funds act. Prosecutors plan to appeal the not-guilty verdicts. This ruling follows investigations into the brief imposition of martial law by former president Yoon Suk Yeol in 2024 and related scandals involving the couple.

Although the first lady does not hold formal power in state affairs, she serves as a symbolic figure for the country, as stated by the lead judge. The court ordered Kim to pay a fine of 12.8 million won and confiscated the diamond necklace she received. Kim, who has been in detention since August, denied all charges. Her legal team is considering appealing the bribery conviction.

During the court proceedings, supporters of Yoon and Kim gathered outside, expressing relief at the not-guilty verdicts. The Unification Church claimed the gifts were given without any expectations in return. Yoon, who was removed from power last year, is facing multiple trials, including charges of insurrection. He has contested the accusations, arguing that declaring martial law was necessary to address government obstruction by opposition parties.

Yoon recently received a five-year jail term for obstructing arrest attempts after his martial law declaration. Prosecutors have also sought the death penalty for him in a separate case. The court is expected to make a decision on this matter on Feb. 19.
