The WNBA board of governors has officially approved a new collective bargaining agreement, marking a significant milestone for the league and its players. The agreement, which was also unanimously endorsed by the players, is set to take effect this season and will extend through 2032.

WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert expressed optimism about the future, stating that this agreement signifies a new chapter for the league, made possible by the commitment of various stakeholders. The next step involves finalizing the detailed terms of the agreement by legal representatives from both sides, expected to be completed shortly.

With the regular season scheduled to commence on May 8, the focus now shifts to the upcoming expansion draft for the two new teams, Toronto and Portland. Details on player protections and draft procedures are still being determined, with the draft anticipated to coincide with the Final Four.

Following the expansion draft, attention will turn to free agency, with over 80% of the league’s players becoming free agents this year due to expiring contracts. Only two veteran players not on rookie contracts are currently signed for the upcoming season. The college draft is slated for April 13 in New York, with teams expected to kick off training camp on April 19, leaving them with limited time to prepare for the start of the regular season.
