A couple from Winnipeg has admitted to numerous counts of animal cruelty after their arrest last year for creating and selling videos of animals undergoing torture and death. Irene Lima, 56, and Chad Kabecz, 41, were taken into custody in October 2024 after an anonymous tip led authorities to a Telegram group named Goddess May Barefoot Premium Crush. This group, with over 100 members, was involved in disseminating and trading videos showing animals being crushed to death.

The Crown attorney, Boyd McGill, disclosed in court that the couple had a price list for various animals to be killed, ranging from a baby mouse for $5 to a family of three kittens for $180. Lima was responsible for crushing the animals with her bare feet while Kabecz filmed the acts, often with a sexual element, as stated by McGill.

The evidence presented in court revealed that over 97 animals, including more than 60 cats and kittens, were subjected to torture and death by the couple. The seized electronic devices contained a significant number of videos depicting the killing of animals, along with communications discussing the videos and plans for further escalating their actions.

The financial records indicated that the videos generated approximately $2,800 in profit from May to October 2024. Both Lima and Kabecz pleaded guilty to six counts of animal cruelty each and were observed in court in restraints, listening quietly as the case details were outlined.

Prior to entering their guilty pleas, a group of protesters gathered outside the courthouse, advocating for severe consequences for the couple. The defense lawyers acknowledged the disturbing nature of the case, emphasizing the extensive evidence that needed to be reviewed.

Sentencing for Lima and Kabecz is scheduled for a later date, pending pre-sentence reports. The prosecution intends to recommend a similar sentence for both defendants. The defense attorneys expressed hope that a clearer understanding of the case would emerge during the sentencing phase.
