“WhaleSpotter Cameras Enhance Whale Monitoring in B.C. and California”

Featured in:

Marine scientists in British Columbia are exploring a new method of monitoring whale activity inspired by a successful initiative in a part of California. In San Francisco Bay, a collaborative effort involving researchers, ferry operators, and the public is utilizing innovative technology to track whales. Specifically, WhaleSpotter cameras, compact thermal imaging devices enclosed in white boxes, are being employed to observe whale movements around the clock. These camera sightings are integrated with human observations in a publicly accessible app.

According to Daniel Zitterbart, the chief scientist at WhaleSpotter, enhancing surveillance through a community-based approach can significantly contribute to whale conservation efforts. Presently, the WhaleSpotter cameras are stationed on Angel Island and San Francisco Bay Ferry vessels, enabling continuous monitoring of whale activity within a range of about two nautical miles.

The importance of tracking marine mammals is underscored by the necessity to identify their migration routes and mitigate vessel collisions, a pressing issue in British Columbia. Recent incidents of documented whale strikes in the region, such as the unfortunate deaths of humpback whales and an endangered J pod orca, emphasize the urgency for proactive measures.

In San Francisco Bay, the WhaleSpotter cameras are linked to the Whale Safe app, facilitating real-time tracking of whale sightings for scientists, maritime professionals, researchers, and the general public. Douglas McCauley, the director of Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory, views this initiative as a community-driven resource that fosters collective responsibility.

While WhaleSpotter cameras are operational on land in British Columbia, there is a need to expand their deployment to ferry vessels for broader coverage. Thomas Hall from San Francisco Bay Ferry anticipates that ferry-mounted cameras will offer invaluable insights into whale behavior patterns and aid in route adjustments based on consistent data analysis. Advocating for a similar implementation on B.C. Ferries, Zitterbart emphasizes the importance of safeguarding humpback whales that traverse these maritime routes.

Responding to the escalating concern over whale strikes, B.C. Ferries is considering installing detection devices on its northern route following a fatal collision with a humpback whale. The ultimate goal is to implement comprehensive protection measures across all ferry routes to ensure the safety of marine wildlife.

Efforts to enhance collaborative conservation initiatives have gained traction as maritime traffic intensifies and environmental changes influence whale behavior. In the context of San Francisco Bay, researchers have observed an uptick in grey whale sightings as these creatures adapt their migration routes in search of new food sources. To address the menace of vessel strikes, coordinated actions involving various stakeholders at regional and international levels are imperative to secure the future of whale populations.

Canadian Wildlife Federation conservation biologist Sean Brillant emphasized the urgency of addressing vessel strikes as a global conservation challenge. Highlighting the significance of data sharing and cooperation among diverse entities, Brillant stressed the need for concerted efforts aimed at ensuring the safety and preservation of whales worldwide.
