Typhoon Fung-wong exited the northwestern Philippines on Monday, causing floods and landslides, leading to power outages in entire provinces. The storm resulted in at least eight fatalities and displaced over 1.4 million people. It was projected to move northwest towards Taiwan.

Prior to Fung-wong’s impact, the northern Philippines had been grappling with the aftermath of Typhoon Kalmaegi, which claimed the lives of at least 224 individuals in central provinces before affecting Vietnam, where five fatalities were reported.

Fung-wong made landfall in northeastern Aurora province as a super typhoon with sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour and gusts reaching 230 kilometers per hour. The storm, spanning 1,800 kilometers, weakened as it traversed mountainous regions and agricultural areas before moving away from La Union province into the South China Sea, according to state meteorologists.

Incidents that occurred included a drowning in flash floods in Catanduanes province, a fatality in Catbalogan city due to a collapsed house, and three children losing their lives in landslides in Nueva Vizcaya province. Additionally, an elderly individual perished in a mudslide in Barlig town, while a landslide in Lubuagan town claimed two lives with two others reported missing.

Over 1.4 million individuals sought refuge in emergency shelters or with relatives before the storm struck, with around 318,000 still housed in evacuation centers as of Monday. The severe weather led to flooding in 132 northern villages and the destruction of approximately 1,000 houses, with road blockages from landslides expected to be cleared once weather conditions improve.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared a state of emergency due to the extensive damage caused by Kalmaegi and the anticipated impact of Fung-wong, known locally as Uwan. Tropical cyclones with sustained winds exceeding 185 kilometers per hour are classified as super typhoons in the Philippines to highlight the urgency associated with such extreme weather phenomena.

The Philippines has not requested international aid following the calamities, although assistance stands ready from allies such as the United States and Japan. Authorities announced the closure of schools and most government offices for Monday and Tuesday, with numerous flight cancellations and stranded passengers at ports due to rough seas.

The Philippines is prone to approximately 20 typhoons and storms annually, alongside a high frequency of earthquakes and possessing over a dozen active volcanoes, making it one of the world’s most disaster-prone nations.
