“Taylor Swift Faces Lawsuit Over ‘Showgirl’ Album Branding”

Featured in:

A legal complaint alleges that Taylor Swift’s album “The Life of a Showgirl” has infringed on the branding of a real showgirl’s life. Maren Wade has filed a trademark infringement lawsuit claiming that Swift’s album from 2025 closely resembles the aesthetic of Wade’s own work titled “Confessions of a Showgirl.” Wade, known for her column and live show about the backstage life in Las Vegas, asserts that both works share similar structures, phrases, and overall impressions, targeting the same markets and consumers.

Described as a “singer, songwriter, comedian, and writer,” Wade, under her legal name Maren Flagg, has built a brand around her showgirl performances, writing, and digital media. Swift’s successful 12th studio album, “The Life of a Showgirl,” featuring a cover with a Las Vegas cabaret theme and vibrant colors, was released in October and sold four million copies in its debut week.

Following the lawsuit filing, Swift released a new music video for the album’s track “Elizabeth Taylor.” Wade initially seemed supportive of Swift’s showgirl imagery on social media but has since been silent. Named defendants in the lawsuit include Swift’s trademark management company, record label, and merchandise division.

The lawsuit argues that Swift’s album and its promotion have caused “reverse confusion,” where the newer brand overshadows the original, leading consumers to view the original as the copy. The lawsuit contends that Swift’s team would have been aware of Wade’s trademark and its potential confusion with their chosen branding. Despite the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s refusal to grant a trademark for “Life of a Showgirl” due to potential confusion, the lawsuit claims that Swift’s team continued to use the name.

The lawsuit seeks a permanent injunction against Swift and her entities from using the “Life of a Showgirl” name and imagery, as well as monetary damages to be determined in court, including profits linked to the brand’s use. Swift’s representative declined to comment on the lawsuit, while Wade and her legal team maintain that the similarities between the two brands were not overlooked by Swift’s camp.
